Sometimes the least inviting places can be home to the most brilliant things.
Take the bogs of the Southern Oregon coast — not exactly the best spot for a casual stroll. But there’s a rare flower that grows there, and it’s been turning heads for probably as long as there have been heads to turn in Oregon.
The Western bog lily once thrived in the marshes and bogs of southwestern Oregon — but they’re on the decline. They now only exist in a narrow 4-mile wide strip along the Oregon/California border.
One possible reason for their decline is that the same bogs the supported the lily have been taken over to support the multi-million dollar cranberry industry. What’s being done to preserve the lily?
