Portland police shot and killed a man near Southeast Portland’s Mall 205 Wednesday afternoon. Officers were initially called to respond to a report of a man stealing merchandise at a department store.
Police said the man had an active arrest warrant for a previous robbery. According to the Portland Police Bureau, officers saw the man leaving the store and attempted to arrest him in the parking lot. They say the man started to run away before a confrontation began.
Three officers shot the man, who died at the scene. Police said the man was armed with a gun that was found next to him.
None of the responding officers were hurt in the shooting. The three officers have been placed on paid administrative leave under bureau policy and the use of deadly force will be investigated.
Investigators have not provided details about the confrontation that led up to the shooting Wednesday.
On Thursday, Portland police told OPB that there have been four deadly use of force shootings by officers to date in 2023. The bureau’s public information officer also said the bureau doesn’t believe any officers have been injured in shootings this year.
In comparison, Portland officers shot and killed four people in 2022 and in 2021.
On Friday, police identified the man killed near Mall 205 as 33-year-old Tyrone Lee Johnson II.
Correction: Four people have been killed by Portland police this year. An earlier version of this story inaccurately reported the number of shooting deaths by police.
