Salem police shoot, kill armed juvenile shooting suspect

Officers with the Salem Police Department shot and killed a juvenile suspect Wednesday evening after they attempted to arrest him for his alleged involvement in two shootings earlier this year.

Around 5 p.m., the boy was contacted by officers at a vehicle parked in the 4900 block of Oak Park Drive Northeast.

According to police, the suspect pulled out a gun as officers approached him. One officer was shot during the exchange of gunfire and was taken to a nearby hospital. He’s expected to make a full recovery.

Police have not released the suspect’s name or age. They say he was involved in a shooting near the Salem Center Mall on March 18, and another shooting near the Cherriots Transit Mall on June 13. One person was injured in each of those shootings.

The four officers involved in the deadly shooting were placed on administrative leave. They were identified as:

  • Officer Brian Frazzini, 19 years with SPD
  • Officer Erick Hernandez, 14 years with SPD
  • Officer Ryan Morris, 20 years with SPD
  • Officer Adam Waite, 14 years with SPD

Oregon State Police will conduct the primary investigation into the officers’ use of force.
