Superabundant: Saltwater taffy making inside a longtime Oregon coast family candy shop

Bruce’s Candy Kitchen has been a family-run business in Cannon Beach since 1963, and over all those years, taffy making has been a constant. These days, the shop has a menu of over three dozen kinds of taffy. “Taffy is a flavored blob of sugar. If you don’t add enough flavor, I mean, what are we doing here?” says Brian Taylor, the production manager and co-owner of Bruce’s. No other candy has made sweet memories at the beach like saltwater taffy. Taffy has been around since the 19th century, so how did the classic candy become “salty”?
