This weekend the annual Ceramic Showcase, billed as the largest ceramics exhibition and sale in the country, celebrates 40 years. Artists will fill the Oregon Convention Center with hand-thrown and hand-built-pottery, sculpture, raku and much more. The gathering is a show and sale organized by the Oregon Potters Association presenting work by both established and emerging artists.

The event has grown from 70 artists the first year to more than 200 artists from all over Oregon and SW Washington expected this weekend.

James DeRosso acknowledges the event as one of his most important shows of the year, and appreciates that it’s run by artists.

“It’s our show,” he explains. “We own it. We put everything into it. I mean, how much fun is that? How great is that?”

To mark the anniversary, a special exhibition of work by the original founders of the first Ceramic Showcase in 1983 will be on view.

Demonstrations of craft techniques are offered as well as a clay exploration area for children.

You can watch more stories of ceramic artists featured on Oregon Art Beat here.
