Strike

United Academics of the University of Oregon has announced its intent to strike as early as Monday, the start of Spring Term, unless it can reach a deal on a new contract. UO’s Office of the Provost said it will not cancel the term if a strike happens.

A bill that would make Oregon a pioneer in the practice squeaked through the Senate on Thursday.

Workers have been on the picket line since Sept. 19. They’re demanding a contract that retains their pension plan, rather than transitioning to a 401(k).

Faculty and student workers at the University of Oregon could vote this month to authorize their unions to strike.

The strike, which is one of the largest health care worker labor actions in state history, included thousands of nurses at all eight Providence hospitals in the state.

Administrators and faculty members continue to work toward a deal, but an impasse declaration sets off a process that could lead to the union’s first-ever strike at PSU.

Nurses will vote on the proposed deal over the weekend. If approved, they would return to work Feb. 26.

Officials at Providence Health and Services have agreed to return to negotiations with a union representing nearly 5,000 nurses across eight hospitals.

Despite a deal for some doctors at St. Vincent Medical Center, the largest health care strike in Oregon history was set to continue Monday.

Nurses at seven hospitals across the state voted to reject the tentative deal their union reached with Providence this week.
