Portland Art Museum conservator Charlotte Ameringer removes a synthetic varnish from “Waterlilies” (1914-15) by Claude Monet, as she works in the conservation lab at the Portland Art Museum, Aug. 1, 2024. The varnish was added to the painting at some point, and makes the colors more saturated and intense than when Monet created the piece. The restoration is possible through funding from the Bank of America Art Conservation Project.
