The Oregon Supreme Court ruled unanimously on Wednesday that Gov. Tina Kotek didn’t have the authority to send a woman who completed her sentence one year ago back to prison, and ordered the woman’s immediate release.

A federal magistrate has ordered that former Oregon Gov. Kate Brown can be deposed in a class-action lawsuit, specifically regarding her role in how the state responded to the coronavirus pandemic inside its prisons. The litigation, first filed in April 2020, represents a massive financial liability for the state.

Oregon Gov. Kate Brown wrapped up a 12-day trade mission to Japan and South Korea this week. At a press conference from Tokyo Tuesday, Brown said Oregon is one of the most trade-dependent states, and one of only six states to see exports grow over the pandemic.

Brown met with student athletes at Roosevelt High School in North Portland to celebrate their district championship and highlight some of their accomplishments as the World Athletic Championships approach in Eugene. It’s the first time the event will be held in the United States.
