The US Forest Service just closed the Eagle Creek recreation area and trail because of the heavy rains this week.

You probably thought the Eagle Creek Fire in the Columbia River Gorge had died out — but no. A small hot spot flared up early Tuesday morning.

Several trails and lakes have reopened to the public — including Starvation Creek State Park, Mount Defiance trail and Warren Lake — but officials encourage caution.

The trail to Benson Bridge at Multnomah Falls will be the first to reopen early this summer. Several more will reopen later this summer. But officials advised caution will still be necessary.

Incident commanders say they are now comfortable that the fire will not grow outside of its existing perimeter. 

The Historic Multnomah Falls Lodge opened its doors to visitors for the first time since the Eagle Creek Fire prompted its closure in September — peak visitor season.
