In 1920, at the age of 48, Marie Equi was sent to prison for protesting the U.S. involvement in World War I. By that point in her life she was already a well respected doctor living in Portland who provided both abortions and birth control, even though they were illegal. She was also active in the movement for the women's right to vote and participated in protests and strikes to increase wages and secure an eight hour work day. She also did not hide her relationships with female partners, even adopting a child with one partner later in her life.
