State officials said they were able to see oil near wildlife and shorelines from the air. Teams with the Washington Department of Ecology are scheduled to investigate any environmental impacts Friday morning.

Two vessels with booms to contain the fuel spill are on the scene and crews are working to clean up the spill, the Coast Guard said in a news release.

The incident is under investigation, but according to the Washington Department of Ecology the spill occurred during a fuel transfer on-board the 610-foot long bulk carrier, Nord Auckland.

According to the Coast Guard the incident was caused by operator error.
