A wildfire on the Warm Springs Reservation rapidly spread to 9,000 acres on Wednesday. The County Line 2 Fire ignited when a trailer lost a wheel and sent sparks into dry grass along U.S. Highway 26.

Several neighborhoods were evacuated Wednesday and several others were asked to be ready to leave. A section of U.S. Highway 26 also closed because of the fire.

Evacuation notices were lifted overnight according to Warm Springs Radio KWSO, but the tribe is advising residents to remain aware and prepared to leave.

The tribe brought in additional resources to battle the fire Thursday.

On Thursday afternoon, the Oregon Department of Transportation closed U.S. Highway 26 eastbound to traffic at its intersection with OR 216. A westbound detour off Highway 26 was tentatively established at milepost 103 near the Deschutes River, but ODOT said that was likely to change to a closure at Madras.

Susan Wommack, manager of the Warm Springs Market, said the community is growing nervous as the fire expands.

"It's just — it's a very scary thing. I mean it's closing access to a lot of highways, to a lot of homes and a lot of work. I mean, It's affecting everything."
