PSU Police Shot At Jason Washington 17 Times, Report Says

Portland State University Police shot at Jason Washington 17 times, according to a medical examiner's report released Wednesday.

Washington was hit nine times, including in his chest, abdomen, back and thigh. According to the report, both officers fired their guns.

Washington was shot and killed by PSU police in June after witnesses say he was trying to break up a fight.

He died of multiple gunshot wounds to the torso.

Washington had his friend's gun holstered to his right hip moments before he was shot.

It’s unclear in body camera footage whether the gun was in his hand.

A grand jury determined the fatal shooting was a lawful act of self-defense and/or the defense of a third person and declined to charge the two officers.

Body camera footage showed police fired their guns fewer than 30 seconds after getting out of their vehicles to respond to a drunken brawl outside the Cheerful Tortoise bar the evening of June 29. Footage shows Washington trying to break up a fight.

An attorney representing Washington’s family has said he intends to pursue legal action.

Washington died wearing a gray T-shirt with two crossed rifles on it, according to the medical examiner's report.
