A state board voted Thursday to ban former Portland Police Chief Larry O'Dea from serving in law enforcement agencies for 10 years.  The Board of Public Safety Standards and Training cited O'Dea's dishonesty about a shooting as grounds for revoking his police certification.

It also relied on a separate investigation about how he handled an employee reporting allegations of a hostile work environment.

O’Dea retired from Portland’s top policing job in 2016. At the time he was under investigation for shooting a friend during a camping trip.

The investigation concluded O'Dea delayed reporting the shooting, then lied about the circumstances to investigators while he was still chief. The board voted 14 to 4, with one abstention, in favor of revoking his police certification.

After a decade, O’Dea can re-apply to become an officer in Oregon, but he would need to start all over with basic training.

A DPSST board spokesperson said O’Dea did not contest the decision to revoke his certification before the deadline.
