California Gov. Jerry Brown has now signed the End of Life Option Act. When it takes effect, California will become the newest state to allow terminally ill patients to end their lives with doctor-prescribed drugs.

California's law is modeled after Oregon's Death with Dignity Act. The deep, personal debate it caused in California was greatly influenced by Brittany Maynard. She was the 29-year old woman with brain cancer who moved from California to Oregon to, in her words, "plan a gentle death." It's been nearly a year since she took the drugs that ended her life.

OPB All Things Considered host Kate Davidson spoke with Maynard's husband Dan Diaz the day after Gov. Brown signed the bill. Diaz said his advocacy for the law helped fulfill a promise he made to his late wife.
