On Oregon roads where extra traction is required on April 1 or later, drivers must carry tire chains or use other types of traction tires.

Oregon drivers with studded tires on their vehicles must remove them by the end of Monday. Beginning Tuesday, police can issue $165 citations to drivers who are still using the tires.

Oregon law only allows drivers to use studded tires from Nov. 1 through March 31 each year. When Oregon road conditions call for extra traction outside studded tire season, drivers must use tire chains or other types of traction tires.

Galen McGill with the Oregon Department of Transportation said even though studded tires are allowed during winter months, drivers should consider alternatives.

“We encourage drivers to use other types of traction tires or chains to help minimize roadway damage caused by studded tires,” McGill said.

Traction tires provide better traction than studded tires on bare pavement and do not cause any more damage than standard tires, according to ODOT.
