Police officer fatally shoots man outside Vancouver Safeway

Police say a Vancouver officer fatally shot a man who had started fighting with him and pulled out a gun.

A Vancouver police officer fatally shot a man outside the Safeway store on Southeast Mill Plain Boulevard last night.

According to the Vancouver Police Department, officers were talking with the man outside the store when he started fighting one of them. Police said the man then pulled out a gun and the officer shot him.

The man was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. His name has not been released.

An officer was hurt in the fight, but police have not described the extent of his injuries. The three officers at the Safeway shooting incident were put on leave as the Washington State Office of Independent Investigations reviews the case.

The officers were wearing body cameras. Police said the footage the cameras captured will be reviewed and released at a later time.
