An officer with the Beaverton Police Department shot and killed a Portland man while attempting to arrest him for theft Monday night. Police said the man was armed and fired his gun during the confrontation.
The Washington County Sheriff’s Office said in a press statement Tuesday that two officers involved are on administrative leave. Spokesperson Shannon Wilde confirmed that one officer opened fire and another witnessed the events.
According to Wilde, Beaverton officers dispatched to Nordstrom Rack near Washington Square Mall shortly before 8 p.m. after receiving reports from staff about a man stealing merchandise. Upon arriving, they confronted the suspect, Jacob Daniel Bundy, 39, as he exited the store. Details of the struggle are scant, but Wilde said Bundy brandished a handgun and fired at some point.
“As officers attempted to detain him, Bundy pulled out a handgun,” Wilde wrote. “After a struggle in which Bundy fired his gun, Bundy was shot by police.”
Officers and medical personnel rendered first aid, Wilde said, but Bundy died at the scene.
Wilde said that the two officers suffered minor injuries during the struggle.
The Washington County Major Crimes Team and the Washington County District Attorney’s Office is investigating the incident.
