Fire crews are still on the scene where a grease fire started in a North Portland warehouse Monday, and a plume of smoke was still visible for miles Tuesday morning.

The fire started at about 4 p.m. at the Shin Shin Foods noodle factory, just off of Interstate 5 near Broadway.

Portland Fire & Rescue spokesperson Rick Graves says the fire apparently started in a hood vent. The fire grew quickly due to grease and other flammables stored closely together in the building.

Nearly 100 total firefighters were called in to help contain it from a safe distance, at one point sending more than 2,000 gallons of water per minute into the building.

As of Tuesday morning, smaller crews are still working to extinguish the fire. Graves says it has been contained, but smoke will likely be visible for several hours.

“Crews have been on scene performing fire watch shifts overnight and will continue to perform fire watch in 2 hour shifts with 2 fire engines per shift until we are confident that the fire is fully extinguished and poses no further hazards,” said Laurent Picard, another PF&R spokesperson, in an email.

Firefighters plan to remain at the scene until 11 a.m., then reevaluate next steps for their fire watch operations.
