A woman from the Hillsboro area died after falling from a cliff in the Columbia River Gorge Sunday afternoon.

Elisha Angelic Macias, 22, had been hiking with a group of friends along the Horsetail Falls trail system. Multnomah County Sheriff’s Deputy John Plock said the woman separated from her friends, went off trail and fell about 50 to 60 feet.

Plock said witnesses saw the fall and attempted CPR — but the woman was dead by the time emergency crews arrived.

The sheriff’s office said its search and rescue team assisted the medical examiner in recovering the body. The medical examiner is working to determine the official cause of death.

A volunteer trauma support group also responded to the scene to provide resources to those affected, officials said.

This is the second time this year that a hiker died after a fall in the area.
