“Once officers arrived at the hotel, they heard gunshots coming from a second-floor room, and officers began an evacuation plan for occupants of the second floor,” Gresham police said in a statement.

As officers made their way to the room, according to the department, 34-year-old Joseph Carrillo entered the hallway carrying a gun. Police say Carrillo pointed the gun at officers, and one Gresham officer shot at him.

Carrillo reportedly fell to the ground after the gunshot, but police learned after they detained him that he was not injured by the gunfire. Medical personnel still evaluated him at the scene, according to the statement.

Officers involved in the shooting are on leave, per department policy. Investigators determined that Carrillo fired a gun through the door of his room into the hallway, and into an adjacent room that was unoccupied. Police said no one was injured by any of the gunfire.

Gresham police charged Carrillo with two counts of unlawful use of a weapon, reckless endangering, first degree criminal mischief and menacing. He is being held at the Multnomah County Detention Center.
