Oregon State University announced Wednesday that enrolled members of federally recognized Native American tribes are eligible for in-state tuition at the school, no matter where they live, starting this fall.
The policy starts with the upcoming fall term. It applies to new students and those who are currently enrolled.
According to the university’s website, the estimated out-of-state tuition for a full year, at 15 credits per term, is $34,983. The estimated In-state tuition is $13,191. Members of Oregon’s nine tribes may be eligible for additional assistance under the Oregon Tribal Student Grant Program.
OSU’s interim president, Becky Johnson, acknowledged in the announcement that the university’s Corvallis and Bend campuses sit on the traditional homelands of tribal members who were forcibly removed and relocated.
“Tribal citizens from throughout Oregon and the country represent multiple sovereign nations and are valued, contributing members of the OSU community,” she said. “This new tuition policy advances our commitment – in the spirit of self-reflection, learning, reconciliation and partnership – that the university will be of enduring benefit to Tribal nations and their citizens throughout Oregon and the country.”
Portland State University instituted a similar policy last month.
