Officers found her body in a small stream, in a park not far from her family’s home in the Murray Hill neighborhood. On Wednesday evening, police announced that her death was a homicide.

Li was a sixth grader at Beaverton’s Conestoga Middle School. The school’s principal, Zan Hess, said in a letter to the school community Tuesday that extra support will be available for students and staff working through the grief.

“Our hearts break for Milana’s loved ones, including her family and friends,” Zan said. “We ask that you keep them in your thoughts.”

Zan also shared a list of resources to help parents and caregivers speak with their children about such a tragic loss.
