Boy Scouts — “Lighter”

Singer-songwriter Taylor Vick, who performs under the name Boy Scouts, dropped the song “Lighter” late last year. The track is an ambient ride featuring melodic vocals that strain to match the audible pain behind each distinct guitar strum. “The act of making music has been my wayfinder during the past year,” Vick said of the confessional sentiment on display throughout the song.

Elephant Stone — “M. Lonely”

Montreal-based band Elephant Stone’s single “M. Lonely” is laden with sparkling guitar work, chest-caving percussion and forceful vocals. The track comes from the new EP “Le voyage de M. Lonely dans la lune,” a concept album that follows the journey of a loner hermit. When his solitude is disrupted, the character, appropriately-named Mr. Lonely, builds a rocket ship in order to escape to the moon.

The Smile — “The Smoke”

Radiohead members Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood are joined by Sons Of Kemet drummer Tom Skinner in this new band called The Smile, whose recordings were produced by frequent Radiohead collaborator Nigel Godrich. The song “The Smoke” settles into an infectious groove, anchored by funky bassline that seamlessly melts into Yorke’s falsetto. In turn, it opens the song up to a wonderful array of horns, flutes, and guitars.
