A Gladstone police officer and a Happy Valley resident wanted in Texas were both shot following a traffic stop Monday night.

Around 8 p.m., Sgt. Travis Hill and Officer Clement Lau of the Gladstone Police Department pulled over a Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Yvette Lares Garcia, 36. During the stop, the officers arrested Garcia after they discovered she had outstanding felony warrants for theft in Texas, the Clackamas County District Attorney’s Office said in a statement Tuesday afternoon.

On their way to the Clackamas County Jail, Garcia, who also goes by Yvette Pando, asked the officers to stop by her house to “conduct a welfare check on her two dogs.” The officers agreed.

Once at her home, Garcia was “able to break away from officers” and run into her house, the district attorney’s office said in a statement. There, she grabbed a handgun and started firing at the officers outside.

Hill was hit in the leg and returned fire. Lau also returned fire and struck Garcia.

After the shooting, officers called for backup.

“Deputies and officers were able to extricate both Sergeant Hill and Ms. Garcia from the house,” the district attorney’s office wrote.

Both Garcia and Hill were taken to the hospital. Garcia is in serious, but stable condition. Hill is in stable condition.

Clackamas County prosecutors had not announced any charges against Garcia by Tuesday afternoon.
