Clackamas Community College is closing its Oregon City location Friday to steer clear of a rally planned for campus.
Fliers are circulating around social media for a “flag wave” event at an intersection near Clackamas Community College. Word is also spreading of a related counter protest meeting at the college itself.
Lori Hall, Executive Director of College Relations and Marketing for CCC, said the college was made aware this past weekend of a social media post promoting the counter protest.
“After conferring with law enforcement, we are acting out of an abundance of caution to keep the college community safe by closing our physical campus for the day,” Hall said. “While we support the right to free speech, we ask community members to exercise those rights in accordance with college policies to ensure the safety of all concerned.”
Clackamas Community College included a screenshot of the counter protest flier in an email to OPB. The flier states: “Oregon City is allowing fascists to continue and grow there [sic] weekly flag wave. If we don’t put a stop to it they will command more control!”
Due to the pandemic, the college is not currently allowing outside events or activities on its campuses, Hall said.
“We are disappointed that activities are taking place on our campus in violation of college policies,” she said.
All in-person classes and in-person sessions of hybrid classes will be canceled Friday, the college said in a Twitter post.
This is not the first time an unsanctioned protest has occurred at Clackamas Community College.
Last September, hundreds of pro-Trump demonstrators gathered at the community college for a rally.
