A recent survey found that more than two-thirds of incarcerated women in Oregon said that past trauma led to their involvement in the criminal justice system. Oregon lawmakers are considering a bill that would require that judges take domestic abuse into account during sentencing if it was a significant contributing factor to a defendant’s criminal behavior. Crystal Magaña testified in favor of the bill. Rep. Anna Williams, D-Hood River, sponsored the bill. And Kevin Barton, Washington County District Attorney and Vice President of the Oregon District Attorney’s Association, has raised concerns about the proposal. They join us.
