Threat of snow and ice forces school closures around Oregon, Washington

Some schools canceling in-person activities through the weekend.

Despite most Portland-area students attending school from home, several school districts have announced closures that impact limited in-person learning and other services. What follows is a list of closure announcements that OPB is aware of.

Multnomah County

THANKS TO OUR SPONSOR:

Gresham-Barlow School District — All after-school activities are canceled Thursday evening through the weekend.

Portland Public Schools — All PPS buildings closed Thursday. All school-based activities are canceled including Limited In-Person Instruction (LIPI), child care and athletics.

Reynolds School District — Online distance learning continues. Thursday and Friday, all school-based activities including meal distribution, supplies pickups, athletics, etc. are canceled.

Riverdale School District — Distance learning continues. All school-based activities are canceled including Limited In-Person Instruction (LIPI) and athletics.

Parkrose School District — School sites will be closed tomorrow. Distance learning will be provided for elementary students, pending power availability (please check in a.m.) 6th-12th graders have a previously scheduled no-school day. Meal service will be closed as well. Athletic conditioning is canceled.

A number of Portland-area private and charter schools have also announced closures and modifications in light of the winter weather.

Washington County

Hillsboro School District — LIPI, athletics and activities (including BLAST) canceled Thursday and Friday.

Sherwood School District — In anticipation of potential inclement weather conditions this afternoon, all on-campus activities after 12 p.m. — including Limited In-Person Instruction — are canceled.

Tigard-Tualatin School District — Distance Learning will continue and online classes will be held as scheduled Friday2. Meal delivery will run only one route Thursday. Deliveries will be canceled Friday. All in-person activities in buildings and on campuses are canceled beginning Thursday at 1 p.m. through the weekend. This includes Limited In-Person Instruction, daycare programs, and all activities including athletics. District buildings will be closed Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and through the weekend. District staff is available via email and phone throughout Thursday and Friday.

Clackamas County

Lake Oswego School District — Closing all school facilities at 1 p.m. Thursday. Grab and Go meals may be picked up Thursday at their regular time and locations. Seven days of meals being distributed Thursday. Afternoon Limited In-person Instruction and Community Transition Program are canceled. All students and staff will be leaving the buildings by 1 p.m. Childcare and co-curricular activities are canceled after 1 p.m. Online learning will continue Thursday and Friday. If power or Internet connection is out, students may have asynchronous lessons. Teachers and principals will notify families in that event.

West Linn-Wilsonville School District — Distance learning continues. All Limited In-Person Instruction and Co-Curricular Activities are canceled starting at noon Thursday.

Columbia County

Scappoose School District — Friday: closed but operating remotely.

Clark County (Wash.)

Battle Ground School District — Primary released at 2:10 p.m.; in-person services canceled after 12 p.m.; Amboy and Yacolt closed.

Camas School District — All in-person and remote classes and activities are canceled.

Washougal School District — All schools closed.

Vancouver Public Schools — Closed Friday, all after-school activities canceled.

Evergreen School District — Closed but operating remotely Friday. All classes switch to remote. No services at schools, including no meals, buses or athletics/activities.

Colleges and Universities

Mt. Hood Community College — Closed but operating remotely. In-person classes and activities canceled beginning noon Thursday and all day Friday and Saturday due to forecasted weather. Remote classes and work continue.

Portland State University — Closed but operating remotely. On-campus operations suspended starting at noon Thursday. Non-essential employees currently working on campus should work from home if possible. Employees currently assigned to work remotely are not impacted by this suspension of on-campus work. Remote/online classes will be held as scheduled.

Carrington College — Campus closing at 3 p.m. Thursday. Evening classes will be held remotely.

East-West College of the Healing Arts — Campus closing at 3 p.m. All afternoon clinic appointments are canceled.

Linfield University — The Portland Campus will be closed from noon Thursday through all of Friday. This includes clinical assignments for 1-3 semester. Fourth-semester students are at their volition depending on the weather in their clinical area. Students who have online classes should plan to attend them as usual, and students who had in-person classes should expect to hear from their faculty members about online options. The McMinnville Campus remains open at this point.

Multnomah University — Campus is closed and on-campus classes are canceled Thursday to Monday. Online classes will take place as scheduled.

Warner Pacific University — All classes that begin after 12 p.m. Thursday will move online. Offices will close at 12 p.m. and operate remotely.

NECA-IBEW Electrical Training Center — Evening activities canceled Thursday. No evening apprentice or journeyman classes. Aptitude test canceled.
