Last month, a Minnesota judge halted the release of an album from the late artist Prince. The record label in the middle of the legal battle was a largely unknown company from Vancouver, Washington.

After the news of Prince's untimely death broke, we reached out to Portland's music community and asked them to talk about the man and the musician, as well as what he means to the world — and what he means to them.

Every journey has a beginning. Long before music lovers across the world found their souls bathed by the cascading notes of "Purple Rain," Prince was the skinny kid on the Minneapolis scene who always had a guitar in his hand.
