The global apparel company based near Beaverton is attempting to rebuild after announcing thousands of job cuts in February.

The massive job cuts at Nike and Intel could be due to changes specific to those companies, not because of a downturn in semiconductors or footwear.

In 2016, Nike pledged to cut its global carbon emissions in half. But in the last year, it laid off many of the employees who worked on sustainability. An investigation from ProPublica and the Oregonian found that Nike has managed less than a 2% cut in emissions. On Thursday, Nike reported a $5.7 billion profit for the fiscal year — an almost 12% increase from the $5.1 billion the company made the previous year.

Nike leaders have pointed to lower online sales as one of the reasons behind the downsizing.

The multinational apparel company headquartered in Beaverton said it needs to "right-size" itself after underperforming.

Nike had sold discounted and out-of-season items at the Northeast neighborhood factory store since 1984. Citing theft and safety concerns, the sportswear giant temporarily closed the retail location late last year.
