After more than a decade in and out of five different courts, a Clackamas County circuit judge ordered the city to provide access to the Oswego lakeshore at Millennium Plaza Park.

Clackamas County Circuit Court Judge Kathie Steele ordered the city to remove all “boulders, metal reeds, and any other obstructions to public access to Oswego Lake from Millennium Plaza Park.” It also requires the city to remove any exclusionary signage that says “Private Lake” or “No Trespassing.”

An Oregon judge has issued a ruling that effectively makes the waters of Oswego Lake open to the public, though it could be appealed. The ruling issued Wednesday finds the city of Lake Oswego’s ordinance that blocks public access to the lake violates state law.

Clackamas County jurors determined that the city of Lake Oswego had no reasonable basis for restricting the public from entering the lake at Millennium Park Plaza.

For more than a decade, the waters of Oswego Lake have been limited to wealthy property owners who surround the lake, as well as city residents who can access a seasonal swim park.
