Trout Unlimited’s Northeast Oregon Hand Crew members do their work manually to avoid negative impact on beavers’ habitat.

The grant is for individuals, businesses and tribes that own up to 160 acres of forest west of the Cascades, or 640 acres on the east side of the mountain range.

Interested parties attended a congressional hearing on Tuesday aimed at determining how $162 million in government money for Klamath Basin habitat restoration should be spent.

Over 1,000 acres of crucial habitat on Mount Ashland will be preserved through a large grant to a nonprofit conservation group.

The designations would require an extra layer of scrutiny for federally permitted projects within the habitat areas.  

Construction started this week on a habitat restoration project that will welcome salmon back into a wetland in the heart of Southeast Portland.
