The current state treasurer will challenge Portland Mayor Charlie Hales.

Wheeler first entered politics when he was elected Multnomah County Chair in 2006. Wheeler was then appointed as treasurer following the death of Ben Westlund in 2010, before being elected to the office. Next year he will reach his term limit, according to the Oregon Constitution.

Wheeler is a sixth generation Oregonian and the town of Wheeler is named after his great-grandfather.

Hales already announced his reelection campaign. The Portland Tribune recently reported he has raised more than $109,000 so far this year.

Wheeler announced his mayoral bid at an event Wednesday morning.
