Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler took a step closer to making his most important hire this week as a community panel interviewed six candidates for police chief.

Wheeler is conducting a national search for a permanent chief. Former Chief Larry O'Dea retired early last summer amid scandal after he shot a friend during an eastern Oregon camping trip. Mike Marshman, who has led the Portland Police Bureau since O'Dea left, is among the finalists.

"All Things Considered" host Kate Davidson got the latest on the search today from Maxine Bernstein, who covers crime and courts for The Oregonian/OregonLive.
