The fire is located about a mile southeast of Canyonville, near milepost 97 of Interstate 5. When it was first reported around 10 p.m. Wednesday night, the fire was about a half-acre in size. As of early Thursday it was at 40 acres. On Friday, it grew to an estimated 1,650 acres.

According to the Douglas Forest Protective Association, on Thursday, the fire spread to a "fire scar" that burned in the 1980s; that area has a significant amount of dead trees and heavy brush.

A preliminary investigation shows that the blaze was caused by an illegal campfire.
