Former Portland Police Chief Mike Reese will be sworn in as Multnomah County’s new sheriff on Wednesday, taking over for outgoing Sheriff Dan Staton on an interim basis.

Staton is retiring following several tumultuous months.

Earlier this year, Staton was accused of making misogynist remarks towards one of his chief deputies, and creating a hostile work environment.

In May, the county's largest employee union called on Staton to resign. Patrol deputies also issued a vote of no confidence.

In May, the Oregon Department of Justice cleared Staton of criminal wrongdoing.

The agency looked into whether he threatened violence against opponents and whether he tried to bribe a deputy to prevent a vote of no confidence.

Reese ran the Portland Police Bureau through 2014. In the past, he's said he'll run for Multnomah County Sheriff in November.
