The Corvallis School Board will meet Tuesday evening to accept the resignation of one of its members, following a controversial tweet.
School board member Brandy Fortson said Thursday in a tweet: “Hey kids, always remember that all cops are bastards.”
The tweet drew national criticism from policing groups, who urged Fortson to step down.
"You should not be involved in the development of our nations children," the National Fraternal Order of Police wrote on Twitter.
Following the tweet, the district's superintendent and other board leaders issued a joint statement, saying Fortson's comments "are not in alignment with the guiding principles set by the board."
Fortson, who identifies as nonbinary, was elected to the seat this year. Their bio says they are a social justice organizer who has worked in the mental health field.
The board said Monday it is focused on moving past the incident.
“The Corvallis School District is committed to fostering a safe and welcoming school community to support teaching and learning in our schools," school board chair Sami Al-AbdRabbuh said in a statement. "We are looking forward to returning our focus to our mission to educate students.”
The board will set about selecting an interim member and hear public comment at its meeting Tuesday, which starts at 6:15 p.m.
