First reservoir built on Mount Tabor to store Bull Run water for Portland's municipal water system, 1894. All reservoirs on Mount Tabor and in Washington Park may soon be decommissioned and/or dismantled, as the Portland Water Bureau turns to underground storage of the Bull Run water.

One of Portland’s many distinctive attributes is its drinking water.  The ordinary tap water here tastes so good that a local company once bottled it under the "Bull Run" label for sale in stores.

From the earliest days of Oregon statehood, rural residents felt isolated from their political leaders and the state capitol in Salem. That distance has sparked several efforts to carve a new state out of Southern Oregon and Northern California called the "State of Jefferson.”

Oregon's capitol in Salem is far removed from the state's most rural residents. In isolated Southern Oregon and Northern California, there have been efforts to create a new state called "Jefferson." The movement has had its fits and starts, but the spirit endures to this day.
