Bend police arrested a 17-year-old student Monday, after they allegedly threatened to detonate a bomb at Summit High School.

Bend-La Pine School District officials suspended classes and activities at the high school after receiving a tip about the threats over the weekend. The student allegedly threatened to detonate a bomb on the campus and made reference to the anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Police said they searched the school grounds and determined the threat was a hoax, finding no danger at Summit or any other school in the area. Authorities charged the student with first-degree disorderly conduct.

It’s the latest example of false threats made against a school in Bend. An unknown person made a false threat against Bend High School in February, which led to all high schools in the area being placed in lockout status.

Schools across Oregon and the country have seen a spate of people making false threats of violence. Some threats, like those made at Bend High School earlier this year, came from outside the country.

In the last state legislative session, lawmakers discussed increasing penalties for people who make threats of mass violence at schools and other public places.
