A hospital security guard was killed in a shooting Saturday at Legacy Good Samaritan Hospital in Northwest Portland. The suspect in that shooting was later shot and killed by police in Gresham.

Police were initially called to the hospital just before 11 a.m. for the report of an armed man inside. When they arrived, they found the security guard had been shot and the suspect had left the hospital.

The security guard was taken to a Level 1 trauma center but died from his injuries.

Police later located the suspect in a vehicle near Northeast 181st Avenue and Northeast Everett Street in Gresham.

While a team of law enforcement officers attempted to take him into custody, police fired their weapons and the suspect was killed, PPB said in a press release.

Police did not release further details about the events immediately before either shooting.

In a statement, Portland Police Chief Chuck Lovell said it was a sad day for the staff at Legacy Health.

“Our hearts go out to the family, friends, and coworkers of the employees affected by today’s tragedy,” Lovell said. “By all accounts, hospital staff and law enforcement did great work responding to this incident, and I’m grateful for the coordinated efforts by all.”
