Two deputies were shot Friday morning in Clackamas County, according to the sheriff’s office. They were responding to a burglary call near Southeast Johnson Creek Boulevard and Bell Avenue just before 7 a.m.
The deputies were both taken to nearby hospitals. During a press conference Friday afternoon, Sheriff Angela Brandenburg said one officer had been released, and the other was expected to be released soon.
“While the deputies were contacting [the suspects], one of the suspects drew a pistol and began shooting at them,” Brandenburg said. “One deputy was shot in the arm and the other deputy was struck in their ballistic vest and in their abdomen.”
Brandenburg said two suspects have been taken into custody and there is no danger to the public. Law enforcement officials asked the public to avoid the area while a major crimes team conducted its investigation.
The National Fraternal Order of Police reports 194 officers have been shot in the line of duty so far this year. That’s a six percent increase from all of last year and a 30 percent increase from 2021.
