Man shot by Oregon State Police after Linn County chase

A 40-year-old Corvallis man was shot by Oregon State Police after allegedly shooting at officers and leading them on a pursuit through Linn County.

A man was shot by Oregon State Police troopers Monday after a pursuit that began in Corvallis and ended in Albany.

Albany police say when Corvallis officers initially attempted a traffic stop at about 11:45 a.m., the suspect refused to pull over and fired several shots at them.

Police followed the vehicle through much of Linn County, with state troopers and county deputies joining the pursuit on Highway 99E.

Troopers forcibly stopped the vehicle near the Albany Train Depot. Shortly afterward, at least one of the troopers shot the suspect, whom police have identified as 40-year-old Stephen Anthony Schmidt-Shelton of Corvallis.

Schmidt-Shelton is expected to survive. He’s facing charges that include attempted murder, reckless driving and hit-and-run.

No law enforcement officers were injured. The Albany Police Department is investigating the shooting.
