Man shot and killed by authorities after traffic stop and standoff in Tillamook County

A low-speed police chase on Highway 101 along the Oregon Coast Thursday night ended with police shooting and killing a man after a two-hour standoff near Winema Viewpoint in Tillamook County, according to the county sheriff’s office.

Tillamook deputies and Oregon state troopers were involved in a low-speed pursuit a gold Chrysler in a low-speed pursuit on Highway 101, north of Neskowin.

Someone had reported to police that a man inside the car was threatening to detonate an explosive device, while assaulting the woman who was driving.

Police reported using spike strips to stop the car south of Winema Viewpoint. After a two-hour standoff, the suspect was shot and killed at approximately 8:47 p.m.

The sheriff’s office has not released details on what happened immediately before the shooting. It is unknown whether the driver in the vehicle was injured.

A major crimes team is investigating and Highway 101 was closed this morning.
