SAULT — “London Gangs”
The British music collective SAULT has been turning heads the past couple of years with its original mixture of rhythm and blues, house and disco. With its newest album, “Nine,” the group has decided to go down yet another original path by making it available online for only 99 days (the clock began ticking on June 25). “London Gangs” is a standout from the recording. The track rumbles at you with the relentless force of a musical hurricane, riding waves of hypnotizing percussion and a monotone vocal delivery that matches the musical tone with the bleak lyrical subject matter of youth gang violence.
Chicano Batman — “Dark Star”
L.A. band Chicano Batman returns with a two-single release that includes the track “Dark Star.” The song was produced by Grammy-nominated John Hill (Portugal. The Man, Santigold, M.I.A.). “Dark Star” starts with a fierce sonic pace before dropping a dark veil and settling into unexpected and delicate instrumental beauty.
Liz Cooper — “Slice of Life”
Nashville native Liz Cooper, best known as the bandleader of Liz Cooper & The Stampede, is set to release a solo LP “Hot Sass” on Sept. 3. Lead single “Slice of Life” jumps on a steady beat and rides it all the way to the end with a mix of muddy (and eventually screaming) guitars and playful vocals that hearken back to classic alternative rock of the ’90s.
