The private liberal arts university Lewis & Clark College in Portland is the among the first in the Pacific Northwest to require its students to get COVID-19 vaccines in order to attend in the fall. Students can register for the fall regardless of their vaccination status, but they must be fully vaccinated by Oct. 15. Faculty and staff are strongly encouraged to get the COVID-19 vaccine but are not required to be. The university’s associate dean for health & wellness, John Hancock, said Lewis & Clark’s twin goals are to keep students safe and get back to its mission of providing an in-person, hands-on liberal arts environment. We get more details from him about how the vaccine requirement will roll out and what it means for students and families.
