Crews were still mopping up after a major fire in Southeast Portland late Monday morning after an overnight blaze lit up night skies in the city’s Montavilla neighborhood.

Investigators said Monday night that a security camera recorded footage showing a suspect starting the fire in a nearby dumpster. That fire spread up an exterior wall and into the building.

The Portland Garment Factory’s textile manufacturing facility at Southeast Stark Street and 79th Avenue put together products for all kinds of local businesses, big and small.

Fire investigators are asking for help identifying the person in the video. People with information are encouraged to call 503-823-INFO (4636).

First reports of a blaze came in at about 3:30 a.m. Monday.

Firefighters saw flames licking out of the second story, went in to fight the fire, but had to leave when the roof showed signs of becoming unstable. The roof eventually collapsed, and dozens of firefighters were needed to contain the blaze.

Nearby houses were not damaged. So far officials believe nobody was inside the building, and there have been no reports of injuries.
