In a few weeks, Oregon will have a ShakeAlert system — a network of sensors that can detect seismic shifts and send out an alert via mobile devices seconds before shaking begins. California has had a ShakeAlert system in place since 2019 and has used it more than a dozen times. We hear about how it works from Emily Holland, earthquake early warning public policy specialist for California’s Office of Emergency Services.
