Fifteen people are candidates in the Portland mayor’s race. And one additional person is being vetted after she submitted her application minutes before the filing deadline last night.

But that’s not even a record. Twenty-three people ran in 2004, when Mayor Vera Katz stepped down. Tom Potter won that election. Twenty-three candidates ran again in the 2012 race won by current Mayor Charlie Hales.
It turns out it is pretty easy to run for mayor in Portland: You have to be a U.S. citizen and Oregon resident. You have to have lived in the city for at least a year before the election. You have to be registered to vote. Then, you pay a $50 fee.
Some people, such as candidates Lew Humble and David "The Ack" Ackerman, appear to just throw their names in the hat every four years without ever launching a campaign. But a handful of serious candidates are in the race this year, too.
They include Oregon Assistant Attorney General David Schor, English teacher and army vet Sean Davis, restaurant owner Sarah Iannarone, and front-runners Multnomah County Commissioner Jules Bailey and State Treasurer Ted Wheeler.
Two candidates withdrew their applications this week. One was a man who wanted to run using the name Chewbacca, but he couldn’t establish it was his legal name.
