Fire in southcentral Washington spurs evacuations

A wildfire in Klickitat County, east of Goldendale, started Friday and has grown to at least 30,000 acres, according to the Washington Department of Natural Resources.

The Newell Road Fire has spurred evacuations in the communities of Bickleton and Roosevelt, according to the Klickitat County Sheriff’s Office.

The fire is threatening homes and farms, including wind and solar farms in the area. Officials say it’s also threatening the Williams Natural Gas Pipeline and the nearby Roosevelt Landfill.

The Red Cross has set up an emergency shelter for wildfire evacuees at Goldendale Middle School.
